US Marines deployed to the San Diego region have been installing razor wire along the border barrier at Friendship Park as a deterrent to keep migrants from jumping the wall.
The area, which sits on a bluff above the Pacific Ocean, had previously been used as a meeting spot for families across the border before pandemic restrictions shut it down. Public access has not resumed.
The new wire installation comes despite prior federal promises to restore access and replant a cross-border garden. The barrier now cuts directly through the space where those plans were to take place.
The Department of Homeland Security says the fencing is replacing deteriorating structures that posed safety risks. Since taking office, President Trump has deployed thousands of active-duty military personnel and increased enforcement along the southern border. Mexico has also stationed its National Guard to deter crossings from the south.
