Washington has given the green light for Russia’s new ambassador, Aleksandr Darchiev, signaling a significant shift in U.S.-Russia relations under President Trump.

The Biden-era diplomatic freeze between the United States and Russia appears to be thawing as Washington has approved Aleksandr Darchiev as Moscow’s new ambassador to the U.S., marking a major step toward restoring full diplomatic relations. The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed the approval, following two rounds of high-level U.S.-Russia talks in Riyadh and Istanbul over the past two weeks.

Darchiev, a seasoned diplomat with over 30 years of experience, currently leads the Foreign Ministry’s North Atlantic Department and previously served as Russia’s ambassador to Canada from 2014 to 2021. His appointment comes amid ongoing efforts to reinstate embassy staff in both Washington and Moscow after years of tit-for-tat diplomatic expulsions.

A Shift in U.S.-Russia Relations

The approval of Darchiev’s appointment is widely seen as part of the “concrete initial steps” toward resuming regular diplomatic engagement and finding a long-term resolution to the Ukraine conflict. His predecessor, Anatoly Antonov, served throughout the crisis in Ukraine and has now returned to Moscow.

The move coincides with growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv, particularly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s contentious meeting with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office last Friday. Reports indicate that Trump reprimanded Zelensky for his “lack of gratitude” for American support and his unwillingness to engage in serious peace negotiations with Russia.

According to TASS, Trump’s administration is now considering halting all military aid shipments to Ukraine in response to Zelensky’s stance. “Military supplies could be halted in response to remarks by Zelensky at a meeting with Trump and his perceived intransigence in the peace process,” the Russian news agency reported. If finalized, the move would cut off billions of dollars worth of military aid, including radars, vehicles, ammunition, and missiles awaiting shipment.

Russia Positions Itself for Economic and Diplomatic Engagement

As Ukraine’s military struggles on the front lines, Russia is actively positioning itself as a willing diplomatic partner under Trump’s leadership. President Vladimir Putin has welcomed the shift, touting the opportunity for “major” economic and diplomatic cooperation between the two nations.
