While the discussions are still in the early stages, an unexpected twist has added intrigue to the negotiations.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Binance founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao has urged former President Donald Trump to grant him a pardon.

CZ Seeks Pardon as Trump Family Eyes Binance US Deal

Zhao, once the face of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, was at the center of Binance’s legal troubles. In 2023, the company pleaded guilty to violating U.S. financial laws, resulting in a massive $4.3 billion settlement. Zhao himself admitted to breaking anti-money laundering regulations and was sentenced to four months in prison. Now, he’s reportedly hoping for a second chance.

With the Trump family exploring a deeper involvement in Binance US, Zhao appears to be seizing the moment to push for his legal relief. Trump, who has expressed growing interest in the crypto industry, could play a key role in shaping Binance US’s future—especially if his family secures a stake in the company. However, granting a pardon to CZ would be a controversial move, given the scale of Binance’s past misconduct.

For Trump, this situation is a bit of a “double-edged sword.” On one hand, aligning with Binance US could boost his pro-crypto stance and win over digital asset supporters. On the other hand, backing CZ, a figure tied to one of the biggest scandals in crypto history, could raise red flags.

More About CZ & Trump

CZ denied the Wall Street Journal’s report, calling it inaccurate and misleading. He stated that he never discussed a Binance US deal with anyone and dismissed claims that he sought a pardon. CZ argued that the article was part of a broader attack on both crypto and former President Trump, suggesting that remnants of the previous administration’s “war on crypto” were still in play.

While acknowledging that no felon would refuse a pardon, he emphasized that he was the only person in U.S. history to serve prison time for a single Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) violation. In a lighthearted jab, CZ noted that even the WSJ seemed to think he deserved a pardon.
