In 2023, the company pleaded guilty to violating U.S. financial laws, resulting in a massive $4.3 billion settlement. Zhao himself admitted to breaking anti-money laundering regulations and was sentenced to four months in prison. Now, he’s reportedly hoping for a second chance.
