The president’s decision follows renewed calls for transparency, with Elon Musk suggesting a live-streamed audit of the U.S. gold reserves.

President Donald Trump announced Thursday his intention to personally inspect the gold reserves at Fort Knox, reigniting debate over the transparency of U.S. bullion holdings. The move comes as concerns mount regarding whether the 4,580 tons of gold reportedly stored in the facility are fully accounted for.

Calls for an audit have gained traction in recent weeks, with Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) pressing for a full review—something that has not taken place in nearly 50 years. The discussion intensified after conservative news outlet Zero Hedge speculated on social media about the need for an independent verification of the nation’s gold reserves.
“It would be great if @elonmusk could take a look inside Fort Knox just to make sure the 4,580 tons of U.S. gold is there. Last time anyone looked was 50 years ago in 1974,” Zero Hedge posted on X.
Musk, who leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), responded with skepticism, asking, “Surely it’s reviewed at least every year?” Paul quickly countered: “Nope. Let’s do it.”
Musk Calls for a Livestreamed Gold Audit
Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Musk suggested that a live broadcast of the Fort Knox inspection would be in the public interest.
“There’s like 5,000 tons of gold in Fort Knox. We all want to see it. This is your gold, by the way. It’s the public’s gold… I don’t know if it is there. We just want to see it and make sure someone didn’t spray-paint some lead or something,” Musk said.
He later took to X, posting, “The ratings on a live broadcast of Fort Knox would be [through the roof].”

Trump: ‘We’re Going to Make Sure the Gold Is There’
During a press briefing aboard Air Force One, Trump confirmed plans to conduct an inspection.
“We’re going to go into Fort Knox to make sure the gold is there. We hope everything is fine, but we’re going to check. The fabled Fort Knox,” Trump stated. When asked what would happen if discrepancies were found, he responded, “If the gold isn’t there, we’re going to be very upset.”

Treasury Secretary Attempts to Reassure Public
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dismissed concerns, stating that regular audits confirm the gold’s presence.
“I can tell the American people on camera right now, there was a report, September 30, 2024, all the gold is there. Any U.S. senator who wants to visit can arrange a tour through our office,” Bessent said in an interview with Business Insider.
