Two Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives announced plans this week to impeach multiple federal judges, accusing them of improperly blocking President Donald Trump’s executive orders and initiatives.

According to a New York Times tracker, at least 18 injunctions have been issued by federal judges in response to Trump administration policies, stemming from over 40 lawsuits targeting actions on budget freezes, immigration, trans rights, and other issues.

Elon Musk, the chief of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and a top adviser to President Trump, publicly called for “an immediate wave of judicial impeachments” earlier this week. Republicans in the House are now responding.

On Thursday, Rep. Eli Crane (R-Ariz.) announced he is drafting articles of impeachment against Judge Paul Engelmayer of the Southern District of New York. Last weekend, Engelmayer issued a temporary order restricting Musk and DOGE from accessing a Treasury Department payment system.

Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) also introduced an impeachment resolution against U.S. District Judge John McConnell Jr. of Rhode Island. McConnell recently paused a Trump administration policy to freeze billions of dollars in federal grants, citing procedural concerns.

“These judges can’t keep interfering with the president’s ability to faithfully execute the laws,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) told The Hill. “Judges like that, they definitely should be impeached.”

Clyde labeled McConnell a “partisan activist,” while Crane described Engelmayer as an “activist judge” during an interview with One America News Network.

“Our case for impeaching Judge Engelmayer is basically that he’s trying to stop the Trump administration from executing their Article 2 powers,” Crane said.

To move forward, impeachment articles must first pass the House by a simple majority. Conviction in the Senate, however, requires a two-thirds majority, necessitating some Democratic support. Historically, only 15 federal judges have ever been impeached, with eight convictions, as reported by Newsweek. The most recent occurred in 2010.

Despite the significant challenges of impeachment, Crane remained resolute. “I’m going to take action,” he said. “I’m not going to sit around and just watch these individuals stop President Trump from doing exactly what he told the American people he was going to do.”
