The following is from Rasmussen Reports.
A recent Rasmussen Reports survey reveals that 45% of likely US voters say they view China as an enemy of the United States, a significant increase from 18% who said the same in January 2017. Just 7% of voters say they consider China an ally, while 43% place it somewhere between being an ally and an enemy.
The survey also finds that 52% of voters say they believe the US ignores abuses by the Chinese government because of its economic power, with only 16% saying they disagree. Opinions about the future of US-China relations are divided: 31% say they expect the relationship to improve, 30% say they think it will worsen, and 29% say they believe it will stay the same.
Partisan differences emerge in the findings. Fifty-six percent (56%) of Republicans, 41% of Democrats, and 37% of unaffiliated voters say they consider China an enemy of the US. Similarly, 55% of Republicans, 48% of Democrats, and 51% of unaffiliated voters say they think the US government looks the other way on China’s abuses due to economic considerations.
The survey highlights notable demographic trends. Older voters aged 65 and above are the most likely to say they see China as an enemy (64%), compared to 43% of voters aged 40-64 and 34% of voters under 40.
The survey of 1,220 likely voters was conducted on January 16 and 19-20, 2025, with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points and a 95% confidence level.
