Google’s Nuclear Plan Could Transform Crypto Mining

Nuclear power is making moves with small modular reactors. These should make on-site nuclear energy more practical. This could have an impact on both AI and crypto mining. However, it requires large upfront investments.

The other part is that using nuclear power in this setup is a new and untested technology. Nonetheless, Google is diving into this territory. So, what effect can this have on crypto mining?

What Is Google’s Nuclear Plan that Could Transform Crypto Mining?

Google’s nuclear power plan involves building seven smaller nuclear reactors in the US. These are SMRs or small modular reactors.  They partnered with Kairo Power. Nuclear energy is nowadays considered a clean energy source. However, I’m not sure if the Chernobyl and Fukushima residents agree on this thesis.

There’s talk of the first plant being ready for service in 2030. By 2035 we can expect the remaining plants to go live. Now, Google is a big AI user. This deal will bring them 500 megawatts of power. Google can use this to offset their computing needs for their AI systems.  SMRs are the new kids on the block in the nuclear power sector. They offer a couple of advantages over traditional nuclear power plants. For instance:

  • A smaller infrastructure footprint.
  • Their design should make them safer.
  • They’re more cost-efficient.

Furthermore, they are different from traditional nuclear power plants. For example,

  • They are smaller. As a result, it’s easier to transport them.
  • Each SMR can produce up to 300 megawatts of energy.
  • You can manufacture them in a factory. This offers reduced construction time.
  • You can install them on-site. This makes them flexible for easy deployment almost anywhere.

Here’s a video by Google about this deal and what it means.

Nuclear energy has been an alternative to crypto mining. It requires high upfront costs. Their availability is also an issue. However, SMRs can change this and offer better nuclear power adoption. Crypto mining is a highly energy-consuming activity. Mining companies are looking for alternatives. For example, cutting costs and reducing carbon emissions.

That’s where SMRs come into the picture. They are more scalable and cost-effective. However, the upfront investment remains an issue. Now, Google’s partnership with Kairo Power offers a potential solution. It opens the door to commercial development of these small reactors. The picture below shows the energy flow through a small modular reactor.

Conclusion

Google partnered with Kairo Power to start manufacturing SMRs. These are small modular reactors. They offer a clean energy source and are easier and cheaper to manufacture. It’s possible to deploy them almost anywhere.
