An illegal alien from El Salvador has been arrested in the brutal carjacking and killing of a grandmother in Virginia this week, authorities say.
The horrifying incident unfolded just after 11:30 a.m. on Sunday morning in Loudoun County, the wealthiest county in the U.S.
Melody Waldecker, 54, had just parked and was walking into a 7-Eleven store in Sterling when she saw a man getting into her car.
Waldecker tried to stop the suspect, but was run over by her own vehicle as he sped away.
She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The suspect was involved in at least one more collision with another motorist before being arrested just after 12:15 p.m.
“The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) has confirmed that Mr. Jose Aguilar-Martinez, the suspect in the fatal carjacking on July 28, 2024, in Sterling, is an undocumented non-citizen. A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Detainer has been since issued for him by Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO),” LCSO explained in a press release on Wednesday.
“Mr. Aguilar-Martinez appears to be from El Salvador, has a driver’s license issued by the state of California, and has no fixed address but was recently residing in Sterling.”
According to ICE, Aguilar-Martinez illegally entered the U.S. at an unknown location and date, indicating he was an ‘unknown gotaway.’
Aguilar-Martinez was arrested last month in Loudoun County for public intoxication.
Sheriff Mike Chapman told 7News his office notified ICE that Aguilar-Martinez was in the U.S. illegally, but the agency did not issue an immigration detainer and he was subsequently released.
Aguilar-Martinez was arraigned on a felony carjacking charge on Tuesday but is expected to face additional charges.
Melody Waldecker, a resident of Silver Spring, MD, was reportedly visiting her elderly mother at a nursing home in Loudoun County when she was killed.
A mother of four and grandmother of eight, she worked as a caregiver at a nursing home in Montgomery County, MD, according to a GoFundMe set up for her family.
An investigation is ongoing.
