Vice President Kamala Harris has finally agreed to a debate with Donald Trump.
On Thursday, Harris had her first real meeting with reporters since being picked as the Democrat presidential nominee three weeks ago.
A local reporter from Wayne, Minnesota reminded Harris that Trump has agreed to three debates. Would she be participating in all three?
“I’ve always been on record,” she replied.
“I am looking forward to debating Donald Trump and we have a date of September 10, I hear he has finally committed to it and I am looking forward to it.”
Harris did not provide any further response.
She walked away before the reporter could get an answer to his follow-up question about the other two dates.
Later that day, she spoke to another group of reporters at Detroit airport and said she was “happy to have that conversation” about additional debates, adding that they would be scheduled for “after 10 September.”
She also said that she was “talking to my team” about giving her first sit-down interview.
“I want us to get an interview settled before the end of the month.”
The Vice President’s unwillingness to speak publicly in any form at any length has been a target for persistent attacks by the Trump campaign. Harris has been widely criticized for her outright refusal to give interviews or hold press conferences since she became the Democrat presidential candidate. The last time she held a press conference was in December of 2023, and her last interview was the notorious “Momala” interview with Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore.
At a rally in Bozeman, Montana yesterday, Trump said, “If you can’t do a press conference, you can’t be president.”
Trump also took aim at Harris and Walz for their records in office and, in Walz’s case, in the military.
“You know, they run and they want to go on a record that’s a fake record. They have a fake record, both of them.”
Walz has been criticized for claiming to have carried weapons for the US “in war,” despite never being deployed to a battlefield in his 24 years in the National Guard, and for retiring to avoid going to Iraq with his battalion.
When Trump mentioned Walz directly by name, the crowd booed. “If comrade Walz and comrade Harris win this November, the people cheering will be the pink-haired Marxist, the looters, the perverts, the flag burners, Hamas supporters, drug dealers, gun grabbers, and human traffickers.”
