CBS News probed whether Kamala Harris’ campaign ripped off Donald Trump’s idea not to tax tips for service workers.
In a segment Monday, CBS correspondent Weijia Jiang reported she was investigating the new proposal unveiled by Harris last week after Trump introduced the exact same idea in June.
“So, the reason we are pressing on this…is because this is one of the first policy proposals that we have heard from Vice President Harris,” Jiang noted.

“But as you mentioned, this is an idea that Trump rolled out in June, and he accused Harris of stealing it from her.”
“So we’re trying to drill down on whether that was true or whether this was an organic idea of hers, something that she and President Biden have discussed,” Jiang reported.
Asked on Monday whether the idea was originally Harris’s, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre deflected and merely admitted it was a “new idea.”
“Obviously it’s a new idea, I’m just saying that we support it,” Jean-Pierre stammered during a press briefing. “But we have been doing the work, for hard-working Americans to lower cost.”
CBS’s Jiang reiterated the reason she was attempting to get clarification was “because we have heard very few ideas at all from the vice president about her plans to…help the US economy.”
The policy would also be a reversal from legislation previously passed by the Biden administration, particularly a bill where Harris cast the tie-breaking vote funding the IRS to the tune of $80 billion, after which it implemented a program cracking down on tips earned by service workers.

Asked Monday if Biden would sign legislation reversing his current policy, Jean-Pierre without a hint of irony responded affirmatively.

Trump bashed Harris on Truth Social over the weekend for stealing his idea, writing, “This was a TRUMP idea – She has no ideas, she can only steal from me.”
After Trump introduced the notion in June, MAGA supporters launched a campaign to alert service workers about the novel tax ban with informative messages noted near the gratuity line, stating, “Vote for Trump! No tax on tips!”
