A man charged with a slew of offenses after allegedly fleeing the scene of a five-car crash he caused while driving drunk in Florida is in the U.S. illegally, according to Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL).
The major collision, which left multiple people seriously injured, unfolded on Sunday afternoon in Santa Rosa County on the Florida panhandle.
Walter Gomez, 20, was traveling at high speed when he ran a stop sign and rear-ended a van in a residential neighborhood, WEAR reports, citing information released by the Florida Highway Patrol.
The vehicle Gomez was driving then slammed into an SUV before careening into a private driveway and striking two parked cars.
Gomez fled the scene on foot but was located approximately a mile away and arrested, authorities say.
“A passenger of the van was seriously injured from the crash, causing his leg to nearly require amputation, according to Florida Highway Patrol. Another occupant of the vehicle was flown to the hospital due to glass being lodged in his neck, according to a release. He is listed in critical condition,” WEAR reports.
Gomez was charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of a crash, and driving without a license and ordered held on $150,000 bond in the Santa Rosa County Jail.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged a detainer against Gomez, according to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office.
On Friday, Rep. Gaetz revealed Gomez is in the U.S. illegally.
“Biden’s open border continues to endanger Northwest Florida. This illegal immigrant was recently arrested in Navarre for a DUI crash that left two people seriously injured,” Gaetz wrote on social media.
It is currently unclear what nationality Gomez holds or how and when he entered the U.S.
