Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says the federal government has been warned that "power prices could rise by as much as 50 per cent next year". “This follows a warning from the head of Alinta Energy, Jeff Dimery, a fortnight ago that power prices were going to rise by more than 35 per cent next year without government intervention,” he said. “Government sources have told Sky News the budget will contain a forecast for energy price rises between 30 and 40 per cent. "Treasurer Jim Chalmers has already said on several occasions that the biggest pressure confronting inflation is power prices." Mr Clennell said much of it is to do with the Ukraine war and the cost of coal and gas.
