Lowy Institute senior fellow Richard McGregor says Chinese President Xi Jinping hasn’t put a “firm deadline” on Taiwan but it’s expected he will act before 2032. He said China’s military could probably take Taiwan “one way or the other”. “The Chinese don’t want to fight a war over Taiwan because they know how absolutely disastrous that could be on many levels,” Mr McGregor told Sky News Australia. “Quite apart from … losing it or struggling to win as has happened in Ukraine.”
