In late September 1952, only months after a rash of “flying saucer” sightings over Washington, D.C. made headlines around the world, dozens of military officers participating in NATO exercises in the North Atlantic were struck by their own UFO fever. Military Operation MAINBRACE and UFO Encounters North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), an international military alliance, staged a 12-day exercise in waters near Norway and Denmark. According to the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP), a federal agency that compiled witness accounts of UFO encounters from the 1950s through the 1980s.
