Austria: Anti-lockdown protesters gather in Vienna amid protest bans

Tensions were visible as demonstrators called for the resignation of several politicians, including Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Interior Minister Karl Nehammer. Nehammer later announced that 10 people had been arrested, and four police officers injured, during the demonstration attended by several thousand. Martin Sellner, a far-right activist who has been refused entry to both the UK and the USA for his extreme views, also demanded Kurz step down, criticising politicians for deciding "all protests that are critical towards the government should be banned in Austria." "That made me just as angry as many other Austrians. First we started to walk peacefully around the ring (Ringstreet, first district of Vienna) and suddenly the mood changed," he added. Austria's third strict coronavirus lockdown, which includes the closure of all non-essential businesses and a restriction on movement, was recently extended until February 7. Authorities banned 15 out of 17 registered demonstrations for the weekend on grounds of protecting public health, according to the Vienna police. According to Johns Hopkins University data, Austria has over 413,000 registered cases and under 8,000 related deaths. #Austria #Lockdown #COVID19 Video ID: 20210131-037 Video on Demand: https://ift.tt/3reRFtv Contact: [email protected] Twitter: http://twitter.com/Ruptly Facebook: https://ift.tt/1jV9FB4
