On the Fourth of July,
Me and my apple pie,
In the lawn chair and sun,
And the firework fun,
Lay back and we wonder,
Of the cannonball’s thunder,
Of the guns and the swords,
Of the kings and the lords,
Of the dying and the bleeding,
Of the crying and the screaming,
And all that it took,
For this Liberty Look.
*
Our Fathers esteemed,
An Independence Beam,
Reflected in emotions of Battle,
For one man alone,
Sitting on earthly throne,
Treated others as though they were cattle.
*
Laws so simple,
In constitutional principle,
That each amendment was merely one sentence,
If simplicity maintained,
And bureaucracy disdained,
All will share in this great benevolence.
*
And now, today,
What, oh what, to say . . .
*
Save us now,
And, heavenly endow,
To teach us love,
The art from above,
Unconditional . . . . . . . Vow.
