PAPER: Fewer public executions sign of unrest? Whereas individuals caught helping defectors would in the past have been the subject of a show trial, extensive media coverage and execution "to send a strong message", a recent case in Hoeryong has not led to a public trial. As well as executing ordinary citizens, Kim Jong-un, the North Korean dictator, is believed to have ordered the elimination of dozens of senior political and military officials in order to reinforce his grip on power. One of the highest-profile victims of the purges was Jang Song-thaek, his uncle, who was arrested in December 2013 and executed for no fewer than 24 abuses of power or contraventions of North Korean law, including "gnawing at the unity and cohesion of the party" and "dreaming different dreams".
