With all the major cable and satellite companies having reported their quarterly numbers analyst firm MoffettNathanson put together a new cord-cutting report and things are bad. Pay-TV providers lost an estimated 762000 pay-TV subscribers over the first three months of this yearfive times more than they lost during the same period last year. To make matters worse Q1 has historically been a strong season for pay TV. "For the better part of 15 years pundits have predicted that cord-cutting was the future" an apocalyptic Craig Moffett wrote. "Well the future has arrived." As I wrote last week Comcast was the only major provider to buck the trend but judging by the way things look that winning streak won't last. 05.03.17 | an hour ago Urgent memo to DNC staffers: Dont open that Google Doc someone just shared with you If you get an email invitation this afternoon from someone sharing a Google doc don't open it! It's very possible it might be a phishing attempt. So far Twitter is burning up with accounts from (largely) journalists relaying such attempts. And someone please tell those lowly employees at the Democratic National Committee who fell for a similar attempt last summer and had their internal drama shared with the world and ended up seeing their qualified candidate lose one of the most consequential elections in American history and I'd like to share a Google Doc with you http://pic.twitter.com/jPOuUDNOjY David Mack (@davidmackau) May 3 2017 Seize the day! The main reason won't come as much of a surprise: Central and local government investment in infrastructure and subsidies according to a new report from Oak Ridge National Laboratories. The government's own investment in electric buses and other official vehicles along with charging stations increased the number of EVs on the road. Bottom line: China has taken aggressive action to make itself a leader in the electric car industry and (as we've seen in other countries) it's driving growth. It will reduce the space between some seats in economy class by 2 inches from 31 to 29 inches. So maybe leave your kneecaps at home the next time you fly American. The move puts American more in line with budget airlines like Frontier and Spirit which have 28 inches of legroom versus 31 or 33 inches on Jetblue Southwest and Alaska Airlines according to SF Gate. Seat squishing is not the end of American's space-maximizing efforts either.A source also told CNN that the bathrooms on 737 jetliners will be smaller which is one way to make sure that no one tries to join the Mile High Club on your shuttle to Toledo. Responding to the recent United debacle U.S. House Transportation Committee Chairman Bill Shuster just yesterday asked airlines to "seize this opportunity" to improve air travelto which the airlines have prepared their response along the lines of: "Ha ha nope." During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing this morning he asserted thatto not disclose the update would have been a "catastrophic" act of concealment. Comey also prompted a million eye-rolls across the country when he admitted to feeling "mildly nauseous to think we had an impact on the election." LD 05.03.17 | 10:45 am Seth Meyers skillfully explains how airline deregulation led to the travel dystopia we all barely tolerate Memorial Day is approaching which means summer travelers will soon be faced with the prospect of trying to choose which airline is less awful: the one that drags customers down the aisle makes a mom cry or cancels every flight in a three-day period. Truthfully though as Seth Meyers noted while looking back at 40 years of government deregulation of the airline industry it really doesn't matter because people will just take whichever flight is the cheapest (and not on Spirit unless we're really really desperate). "Let's be honest" Meyers said. "The main reason airline travel is so awful is that we the customers are okay with it being awful as long as the ticket prices are low enough. If there was an airline that offered $50 round-trip tickets to any destination in America as long as the pilot could open-hand slap one passenger of his choosing in the face that airline would never have an empty seat." We'll be sure to alert you the second that some airline cashes in on that amazing marketing opportunity because you know they will. 05.03.17 | 10:40 am Exercise in a pill is one step closer to reality Good news lazy people: Everyone knows that exercise is good for you but everyone also knows that a Netflix marathon is vastly superior to running an actual marathon. Luckily science is there to save us from ourselves. A team of scientists at the Salk Institute have created a pill that mimics many of the benefits of exercise including increased fat burning and stamina at least in mice. 05.03.17 | 10:23 am Facebook is hiring thousands of people to make sure no more live killings are uploaded Mark Zuckerberg said today that Facebook is taking action to curb the amount of violent and abusive content uploaded to its platform. In a public post this morning he wrote that the company would be hiring "3000 people to our community operations team around the worldon top of the 4500 we have todayto review the millions of reports we get every week and improve the process for doing it quickly." He added that Facebook is working on building tools to make it easier to report content and faster for moderators to take it down. This is one of many steps Facebook has to take to truly battle this problem. Hopefully it will make a difference. 05.03.17 | 10:01 am Outdoor Voices creates a fun new way to shop for athleisure online Outdoor Voices the cult athleisure brand known for its muted colors and soft fabrics discovered early on that customers want simple "kits" made up of a few matching garments they need for a particular activity. A cropped top and leggings for the studio for instance or joggers and a T-shirt for more casual recreation. These kits have generated 10% of Outdoor Voices' business. Today the brand is launching a new interface that allows customers to mix and match items to create more personalized kits. The idea is to help navigate the vast inventory of products by curating outfits based on the customer's preferred activity color preferences and style. It's a fun platform designed to simplify online shopping. ES Fast Company & Inc Mansueto Ventures LLC
